Food Can Balance Your Energy: Try the Salty Creaminess of Whipped Goat Cheese to Cool the Heat!

Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”

This famous quote is often attributed to Hippocrates, although there’s no actual proof he ever said it. But whoever did say it was brilliant! Everything we put in our bodies affects us, so not only can we nurture ourselves with food, we can heal and balance ourselves with it, too.

It’s long been known that specific flavors support and balance each of the Five Element energies. Today, we once again honor the summer energy of Fire, but as we move into the proverbial “dog days” of summer, we’re going to bring up more Water energy to help keep our Fire energy balanced. The taste that supports Water is salty, and there are any number of ways to include this flavor in our lives. Today we’re going to experience the creamy saltiness of a delightful whipped goat cheese dip and spread!

Chevre’ (French for goat) was created in the 8th century A.D. when the Moors brought goats to the Loire Valley where French goat cheeses were first made. And so began our love affair with spreading it on crackers, baking it in bread, and using it any number of ways (including on pizza)! Nutritionally, a 1 oz serving of goat cheese gives us 5 grams of protein and 40 mg calcium, along with iron and potassium. It is also a good source of selenium, an essential trace mineral more often found in seafood. Selenium helps our bodies break down DNA-damaging peroxides, which can lower our risk of developing conditions like cancer, thyroid disease, and cardiovascular disease.

So, gather your ingredients and get ready to create a delightful (and lightly salty) goat cheese dip and spread courtesy of Unbelievably easy to prepare, this dip is equally yummy served hot or cold. It’s great on roast beef, a grilled veggie sandwich, or spread on a portobello mushroom burger. Other fantastic ideas include serving it with chicken, beets, and of course, the obligatory bagel or toast!
