“Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” This famous quote is often attributed to Hippocrates, although there’s no actual proof he ever said it. But whoever did say it was brilliant! Everything we put in our bodies affects us, so not only can we nurture ourselves with food, we can heal and balance ourselves with it, too. It’s long been known that specific flavors support and balance each of the Five Element energies. Once again, to honor the summer energy of Fire, we’re going to bring up more Water energy to help keep Fire energy in balance. The taste that supports Water is salty and there are any number of wonderful ways to include this flavor in our lives. Today we’re going to experience the sweet saltiness of a refreshing glass of Salty Lemonade! Not only will the saltiness bring up Water energy to help balance Fire, the sweetness of the lemonade will also bring up Earth energy, which as we discussed last week, helps to balance Fire energy, too. This sweet and salty lemonade is a perfect thirst quencher for summer. A quick and easy drink to prepare, it can be ready in 5 minutes. Plus, lemons are a great source of Vitamin C and contain many healthy plant compounds, minerals, and essential oils. And according to some sources, eating lemons may lower your risk of heart disease, cancer, and kidney stones. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to help support your Water energy (so it’s ready to help manage your Fire) with a delicious glass of Salty Lemonade courtesy of pavaniskitchens.com. All you need to make this thirst-quenching drink is a large lemon, salt, sweetener of your choice (the recipe calls for sugar, but other sweeteners will work just as well), ice cubes, and mint to garnish. Bon Appetit! Salty Lemonade Ingredients 1 large lemon (or more, if desired) ¼ cup sugar (or sweetener of choice, adjust as desired) ¼ teaspoon of salt (adjust as desired) 1 bottle club soda (or water, if desired) Several ice cubes Fresh mint to garnish Makes two servings Directions Squeeze the lemon juice into a bowl. Pour the lemon juice equally into two serving glasses. Add sugar (or other sweetener) and salt, then stir well. Add ice cubes to serving glasses. Add club soda (or water) to fill the glass. "It’s long been known that specific flavors support and balance each of the Five Element energies. Since it’s still summer up here in the Northern hemisphere, we’re still honoring the summer energy of Fire, but we’re going to come at it a little bit differently this time. We’re going to use the taste that supports Earth, the element that pulls energy from Fire in the Five Elements model. This means that today is a perfect day for a healthy sweet like Chunky Monkey Oatmeal Bars because Earth responds to the taste of sweetness!"...

"This week, as we sit just five days away from the Summer Solstice, we are going to honor the energy of balance and transitions that sits with the Earth element. Earth holds the balance for us during the equinox times, and support transitions as we move from the longest day of the year to the shortest day and back again. Always ready to nurture and support, Earth responds to the taste of sweetness."...
